Of unknown parentage, as he was abandoned as a child, calling himself Brahmachari (Shammi Kapoor) lives in a heavily mortgaged house, with twelve other young orphans, and a servant/former thief (Mohan Choti). He struggles everyday to make ends meet. He cons the neighbouring landlord (Asit Sen)into forcibly giving him money so that they do not make any noise when he is showing the house to prospective tenants. One day he rescues Sheetal Choudhary (Rajshree) from killing herself. She was killing herself as her childhood betrothed, Ravi Khanna (Pran), is refusing to marry now that she is poor and the Khannas are wealthy. Brahmachari commits himself to helping groom and educate Sheetal so that she can meet with the high standards of Ravi and thus win his heart. In this process he falls in love with her, but is committed to the children more than ever before, and Sheetal is determined to win back Ravi at any cost.

Two brothers namely the eldest Baba and the younger one Avinash live in a small apartment in a Bombay city slum. Another orphan named Nawab reside there with them along with there widowed mother. Jeevanlal lives in a small village in India with his wife, Sita, a son, Dharmchand and daughter, Meena, and makes a living by stealing. One day he steals from the Tehsildar’s home, returns to his home and hides the stolen property with his son. When the police arrive, Dharma hands over the stolen articles to them, they arrest Jeevanlal, he is found guilty, and sent to prison. Years later, Dharma has grown up but his dad hates him. Then one day both father and son get into a fight over selling the cow, Jeevanlal strikes his son, and Dharma takes a stick to defend himself. Sita intervenes, scolds Dharma for daring to attack his father, and asks him to leave. Dharma leaves home, goes to Bombay, finds work with a building contractor, earns money and sends his savings to his mother. Then one day Sita receives a letter from Dharma that he is returning home. She goes to the bus-stand to greet him, but is told that he is already gone home. When she reaches home she is shocked to find her husband lying dead in a pool of blood and her son standing over his dead body with a bloodied axe. The police arrest Dharma and he is held for trial. It is then that the truth will come out what really transpired between father and son that compelled one to kill the other.

Raja (Saif Ali Khan) and Yash Vardhan (Aditya Pancholi) are childhood friends. Though they come from different backgrounds, Raja being poor and Yash being wealthy, they treat each other as brothers. Rani Sharma (Kajol) enters their lives, and they both fall in love with her. Raja and Rani both love each other very much and vow to be together. However Yash, jealous and bitter tragically kills Raja. Rani witnesses what he did and tells Yash that they will be together again and he will not be able to do anything. She jumps to her death, leaving Yash heartbroken. Many years have passed and Yash is unmarried and lives with his Dai Ma (Aruna Irani). Fate brings him to Reshma (Kajol) who looks like Rani. Yash soon discoveres Raju (Saif Ali Khan) who looks like Raja. Yash looks after Reshma but she encounters Raju and remembers bits of her past life. After several other encounters with him she remembers what happened in her past life but Raju does not remember a thing. Yash wishes to marry Reshma and does whatever he can to make Raju leave. Reshma confronts Yash, she escapes him and goes to Raju who is about to leave the city. She explains what happened and he remembers what happened to him. They barely manage to escape Yash, but he is determined to make sure that Reshma stays with him only. Yash chases Raju and Reshma to where Raja and Sharma originally died. Raju is hanging on to Yash’s hand, ready to die just like Raja did, but reverses it. Now Yash is hanging on for dear life and just as Yash has Raju convinced, Raju lets go, and kills Yash, and to live with Reshma.
